Presentations for Size Matters Workshop Available

Presentations from the LACASIST Spring Workshop, held on May 21, 2010 at The Claremont Colleges, "Size Matters: Engaging Users Where They're @" are now available!

Size Matters: Engaging Users Where They are @

Media technologies are both proliferating and converging. Libraries and corporations continue to seek new ways to utilize these technologies in order to extend their presence in both traditional physical and virtual spaces. The workshop will examine how libraries and others are using large screen displays and mobile applications to inform users and extend library services by engaging people where they are @: home, on the go, in the library, or on their phone.

2010 McKinley Student Scholarship Essay Competition

The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (LACASIST) is sponsoring the 18th Annual Margaret McKinley Student Scholarship Essay Competition. This competition, established in 1992, and renamed in memory of the late Margaret McKinley in 1993, is intended to encourage students in Library and Information Science programs to consider the benefits of participation in the activities of professional societies.

Peter Ingwersen: Frameworks for IR Research

Join us as Professor Peter Ingwersen gives his talk on the Laboratory IR tradition (the Cranfield Framework) in light of the Integrated Cognitive IR Research Framework. These frameworks are analyzed in relation to several interactive IR models. The Integrated Cognitive IR Framework will be discussed, in particular with respect to central variables and functionality.

2009 CISTA Recipient: Dr. Peter Ingwersen

New Board Slate for 2009-2010

I'm very pleased to announce your new Executive Board for 2009-2010.

The newly appointed Board for the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (LACASIST) met to select officers for the coming year. According to our bylaws, our Board is required to seat three officers: Chair, Chair-Elect, and Treasurer.

Recipients are those individuals who are recognized by their colleagues as exceptional leaders whose dedication, commitment and vision inspire others, or whose singular contribution to the field of information science has been particularly significant. Collaborative Tools: Best Practices and New Trends

What does it mean to collaborate in today's Web 2.0 world? A panel of speakers pooled from LACASIST and the LA-UX (User Experience Meetup Group) will give a breakdown for best practices on keeping your head above water on collaborative documentation and team productivity. They will talk about collaboration tools and tips for better communication, every day productivity, and shared documentation. Some topics covered include using collaborative document sharing (Google Apps), online project management tools (Basecamp, etc.).

Holiday Party with LACASIST & SLA-SCC

Join us for a fun and festive evening at the Skirball Center on December 4th at 5:30 pm.  LACASIST & SLA-SCC are proud to present the first joint holiday meeting of special librarians in southern CA.  There will be a lot of delicious food, fun games and prizes, white elephant gift exchange and plenty of networking with librarians, infopros, library support staff, students and vendors.

2009 McKinley Winners

LACASIST is pleased to announce that Ann Roll is the first-place winner of the 2009 Margaret McKinley Memorial Student Scholarship Essay Competition. As the winner, Ms. Roll receives reimbursement funding up to US $1,000 for registration, airfare, and hotel expenses to attend ASIS&T’s 2009 Annual Meeting in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and a one-year membership in ASIS&T.
