Custodial Provenance & Processing History:
            Since the Chapter's founding in 1961, several individual archivists have overseen the collection and description of materials documenting the Chapter's events and proceedings. Often they served as an officer of the Chapter; the collection is much indebted to their work. These individuals include Gretchen Johnson (1985, CSU Long Beach, drafted policy and contents), Wendy Culotta (1986 & 1988-1991), Lois Benson-Talley (1987), Libby Gill (1992), Carolyn Loeffler (1992-1997), Mary Sellen (1997), and Claude Zachary (1998-present, USC). Johnson established the archive in 1985. Zachary accessioned the materials in 1999 and prepared a digital inventory (derived from typed lists) describing the collection arrangement. The present finding aid, prepared in 2010 by Sarah Buchanan, was expanded to include materials from 2000-2010. The collection reflects original order, and continues to receive material generated by the current Chapter membership.
            Jan Krcmar donated the newsletter issues (1963-1984), on Mar. 25, 1986.

Scope and Content
 
            The collection consists of operational documents, and chapter communiqués with ASIS&T national headquarters. Media content includes program audio tapes, video tapes, and CDs.
 
Historical Note
 
            In 1961 the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Documentation Institute (LACADI) was founded. A newsletter was first published in 1963 under the title "The Informer." The publication's name "OASIS: Observations of the American Society for Information Science" was adopted in 1967; it added "& Technology" to the subtitle in the 2003 issue. It is free to all members of the Chapter and to the advertisers; mailed to members from 1961-2002; available online 2003-present.
            A directory of members of the Chapter has been issued aperiodically since 1970; followed by a 1974 issue. The 1986 directory lists 293 members and includes an organizational listing; it was prepared for the Chapter's 25th Anniversary. An issue was prepared in 1993. ASIS&T Headquarters maintains the Chapter's most current membership directory, available through asist.org. It also is available free to all members of the Chapter.
            Proceedings of the LACASIS 1984 Continuing Education Seminar "Local Area Networks and Libraries" were published in 1985 by Pacific Information, Inc., and are available from them. Proceedings of the LACASIS 1985 Continuing Education Seminar "Microcomputer Power: Option or Necessity" were published by Learned Information in 1987. In 1993, hands-on workshops on the Internet were offered.
            Additionally, Benson-Talley's Memorandum of Aug. 14, 1987 described her Board's efforts in compiling contact information for 37 officers from the prior 25 years. She received responses to this letter but no further materials.

Organization and Arrangement
 
            Boxes 1-5 contain print materials from 1961-2004 including: Newsletter issues (1963-1997), chairperson papers (1979-1987), program information (1979-1997), and Annual Reports (1983-2003). Box 6 contains media content (1984-1997) including audiotapes from individual programs and workshops, and a couple of Bill Gates videotapes.
 
            Boxes 7 and 9 contain material (1994-2005). Box 10 contains (bulk) Newsletter issues (1998-2002). Boxes 7-10 were assembled in 1999.
 
            Note: Box 8 contains materials (1979-1999) consolidated in 1999 (some cancelled checks discarded). Some workshops are wanting (1988, 1991, 1997 [Vivian H.], 1998 [Marianne A.]).
