The 1999 LACASIS Business Meeting and Presentation Program was held on June 15 at the Los Angeles Times. The Los Angeles Times Editorial Library recently expanded the scope and services of its image archiving system to fully support the LA Times' Photo Department's image processing and production functions for the daily paper. Speaker Bill Lawrence, Database Architect for the Editorial Library of the Los Angeles Times, demonstrated the LA Times Library Image Archive and new Live Image Database, and previewed the Library's exciting Web site management tool.
LACASIS' 1999 Résumé Writing Program was held April 25 at the California State University Fullerton Library. The program opened with a panel of speakers that discussed the hiring process and skills desired in several different areas of library and information science. Following the panel discussion, professionals from several different fields reviewed student résumés.
The topic for the 1999 LACASIS March meeting was: Automation Support for Distributed Team Collaboration. It was held on March 23 at the Manhattan Room in Manhattan Beach, CA. Dr. Maria (Lolo) Penedo, a Technology Fellow and Senior Engineer/Scientist in the System and Information Technology Group at TRW, spoke about the Infrastructure for Collaboration among Distributed Teams Project at TRW. The project's mission is to improve the ability of dispersed teams to collaborate via semi-automated collaborative processes supported by existing technologies.
LACASIS, with the Special Library Association Southern California Chapter, hosted their 1998 Annual Holiday Meeting on December 15 at the Cal Tech Athenaeum. The guest speaker was writer and performer Sandra Tsing Loh.
LACASIS hosted its annual awards dinner on November 10. The guest of honor was 1998 recipient of the Contributions to Information Science Award Seymour Lubetzky. The Margaret McKinley Scholarship Award was presented to 1998 winner Holly Ying. The dinner was held at the UCLA Faculty Center.
