Each year, LACASIS sponsors a workshop that focuses on cutting edge technology and developments in the field of Information Science.

Peter Ingwersen: Frameworks for IR Research Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Join us as Professor Peter Ingwersen gives his talk on the Laboratory IR tradition (the Cranfield Framework) in light of the Integrated Cognitive IR Research Framework. These frameworks are analyzed in relation to several interactive IR models. The Integrated Cognitive IR Framework will be discussed, in particular with respect to central variables and functionality. 
 
Each year, the Los Angeles Chapter of American Society for Information Science and Technology presents its Contributions to Information Science Award (CISTA) to one or more individuals who have made significant contribution to the field. Recipients are those individuals who are recognized by their colleagues as exceptional leaders whose dedication, commitment and vision inspire others, or whose singular contribution to the field of information science has been particularly significant.

Collaborative Tools: Best Practices and New Trends Thursday, November 19, 2009

What does it mean to collaborate in today's Web 2.0 world? A panel of speakers pooled from LACASIST and the LA-UX (User Experience Meetup Group) will give a breakdown for best practices on keeping your head above water on collaborative documentation and team productivity. They will talk about collaboration tools and tips for better communication, every day productivity, and shared documentation. Some topics covered include using collaborative document sharing (Google Apps), online project management tools (Basecamp, etc.).

Accessibility: Are You Reaching Everyone? Friday, May 8, 2009

The program will focus on the accessibility and usability of websites and web-based products and services. Given the fine line between accessibility and usability in today's realm of information technology, these words are often intertwined. Speakers will address things to consider when exploring, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating websites and web-based technologies in order to reach all users. Special emphasis will be placed on users with special needs and disabilities.

2009 CISTA Award Recipient & Featured Speaker Professor Dagobert Soergel of the College of Information Studies, University of Maryland will give his talk on "The task-centric revolution. Weaving information into workflows." Systems should be centered around tasks, not applications. This talk will present ideas and techniques towards the design of task-centric systems.

A wide range of speakers will discuss these and other issues surrounding social tagging, its implications for traditional classification and what it all means for the future of libraries, museums, and access to information.
